Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a baby carrier is ergonomically designed?
All of the carriers we stock at Natural Baby Shower, and from the well known brands, will be designed ergonomically for you and your baby. Carriers should position your child in a natural position that supports their spine, pelvis and hips correctly. An ergonomic carrier comes with a wide, comfortable base that supports their weight and holds their hips and legs in a frog leg or M shape. In this position, your baby’s bottom is lower than their knees, while their knees and hips are level with one another and hips are spread open. Keep an eye out for the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) logo for extra peace of mind.
How can I prevent my baby from overheating?
We suggest choosing a baby carrier made from a breathable material such as organic cotton, natural viscose or tencel. Some soft structured carriers are made from mesh-like materials for added breathability to help keep you and your little one cool. Remember to also dress your little one for the warmer weather in lightweight and breathable clothes.
Can you breastfeed whilst baby wearing?
Yes! It is one of the many benefits of baby wearing that we love. It is easy to nurse discreetly when the baby is in a sling as the fabric shields both the baby and the mother from the public view, and it means your hands can be free to do other things. It may take a little trial and error to get your baby in the right position.
Is baby wearing safe?
Absolutely! Baby wearing is completely safe, you just need to take extra care your little one is being supported in the right areas. Following the frog leg rule and ticking off all of the TICKS rules previously mentioned will ensure your little one is positioned and supported correctly.
How long can I carry my baby for?
If your baby is in a carrier that supports the correct positioning and is suitable for the weight of your child, you can carry your baby from the newborn stage all the way through to toddlerhood and even beyond. It is mainly down to how long you feel comfortable and how long your child is happy to be carried. As your baby gets heavier it's a good idea to buy a carrier that allows for multiple carrying positions, including carrying your baby on your back for extra comfort for you.
Is it safe to wear a baby carrier while pregnant?
Baby wearing is safe while you're pregnant, but we always recommend checking with your GP or midwife first. Just remember to listen to your body and not over do it. As your bump grows you may need to change your carrying position, you may find carrying on your back more comfortable.
