Things to consider
So now you know all about the benefits and the different types of baby nests + pods, but how do you know which one is right for you? Before you start shopping for your baby nest, it is good to know what to look out for and some of the most important things to consider.
Keep the following points in mind when you are shopping and researching to help you pick the perfect baby nest + pod.
Breathability
For nests that encourage supervised daytime napping, the outer ring has to be extensively tested for breathability, according to a specific safety method BS 4578:1970 standard.
The Purflo Sleep Tight Baby Bed features breathable mesh base and sides allowing air to safely circulate, so baby can breathe easily.
Firm structure
Although your little one may not feel very heavy, a baby nest or pod should feature a sturdy mattress or bottom.
It may seem contradictory as their padded sides are designed to cocoon and soothe, however the base should be structured enough to keep shape when lounging.
Oeko-Tex Standard 1 certificate
When a product has a Oeko-Tex Standard 1 certificate, you can be sure that the materials are free from harmful substances. All the elements are extensively tested including zippers, sewing yarn, fabrics, labels and more.
Baby nests and pods should meet the additional requirement for saliva-resistance meaning that colours and prints should not bleed or stain when babies suck on them.
Washable
Nests and pods also work as changing mats, loungers or even sleep stations which is why they can get a little messy.
Make sure that the cover or even the whole product is washed regularly to keep them clean.
Longevity
Some nests and pods feature a detachable bottom to allow more wiggle room for growing legs.
Most baby nests and pods can be used up to approx 8 months, but some like the DockATot Grand Deluxe+ is designed for use up to 3 years.
Portability
Baby nests and pods are designed on the basis of portability. They sometimes feature carry handles on the outside of the bumper to be easily transported from room to room or when on the move. Most are lightweight and compact to fit in a standard car boot or doorway.
Safety Criteria
There are a few key things to look out for that ensure you use your baby nest or pod safely. Make sure you always:
- Place it on flat, low, non-heated surfaces and only play with baby at floor level
- Place baby with their head at the pointed end of the nest
- Place baby on their back in the middle of the nest and their feet at the foot of the pod or nest
Equally, make sure you never:
- Raise the nest or pod, it should always remain flat
- Leave baby unattended in the nest (excluding the Purflo Sleep Tight Baby Bed)
- Use the baby nest and pod once your baby can move/turn from back to belly
- Use additional mattresses, extra bedding or waterproof pads inside the nest or pod
